Your Thyroid Problem Might Be a Blood Sugar Issue

Your Thyroid Problem Might Be a Blood Sugar Issue

Did you know that your blood sugar could hold the key to your thyroid health, metabolism, and overall well-being? Millions of people unknowingly struggle with insulin resistance and prediabetes, setting off a chain reaction of inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and impaired healing.

High blood sugar doesn’t just affect your energy levels—it influences how every system in your body functions. In this article, we’ll uncover the hidden ways blood sugar and insulin resistance can sabotage your thyroid health. It’s time to empower yourself with knowledge and take control of your health journey.

There is a 50% chance you have a blood sugar problem.

“About one of every two American adults has or is at risk of having diabetes, with approximately a third of those with diabetes unaware they have it…”

Blood Sugar and Thyroid Relationship

You are probably wondering how your blood sugar could affect your thyroid gland. Thyroid health depends on balanced regulation of the thyroid gland, the hormones it makes and how those hormones interact with your cells.

If blood sugar and or insulin levels are too high, this results in inflammation and damage that can have a negative impact on your overall thyroid health from top to bottom. The top I’m referring to is you’re the part of your brain called the hypothalamus where thyroid control begins all the way to the bottom, being the receptors inside your cells which is thyroid hormone’s destination.

Millions of people have blood sugar and or insulin problems and don’t even know it. This is primarily due to being tested or not being tested properly.

19% of adults with prediabetes reported being told by a health professional that they had this condition”

So…most people don’t even know they have a problem

“George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Cellular and Molecular Physiology… co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center… states that… insulin resistance, a condition found in approximately forty percent of U.S. adults.”

Insulin resistance is rarely screened for in routine blood work

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is when your cells don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin. As long as your pancreas can make enough insulin to overcome your cells’ weak response to insulin, your blood glucose levels may stay in the healthy range.

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes usually occurs in people who already have some insulin resistance.

How Blood Sugar and Insulin Cause Thyroid Problems

Chronic inflammation caused by high blood sugar and insulin resistance disrupts thyroid health, immune function, and metabolism. Elevated glucose levels lead to inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and hormonal imbalances, which worsen autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Addressing this requires lab tests like HbA1c, fasting glucose, and hs-CRP, alongside lifestyle changes. Taking early action can restore balance, improve energy, and support long-term health.

Inflammation

There is good and bad inflammation. If you cut your finger, inflammation aids the healing process and that is good inflammation. If inflammation persists for long periods of time…called chronic inflammation, it is damaging to cells, and this is bad inflammation.

Increased blood sugar and insulin lead to chronic inflammation and interfere with countless bodily functions and biological processes including thyroid function.

Elevated glucose levels activate immune cells to release inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. These cytokines can disrupts metabolic processes and hamper the body’s ability to heal.

A vicious circle can develop where increased blood sugar causes inflammation and increased inflammation makes it more difficult to keep blood sugar levels under control.

Poor Immune Function

Your immune system has 2 primary functions: Protection and Healing. Prediabetes or insulin resistance compromise both of these functions.

Insulin resistance and high blood sugar impair the function of your immune cells, reducing your body’s ability to fight infections and repair damaged tissues, delaying healing processes.

Autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s and Graves’ are the result of immune system dysfunction. The immune system is supposed to regulate itself and not attack the body. Increased blood sugar and insulin can further disrupt this regulation.

High blood sugar adds stress to your body and makes nearly every system work harder. This includes the white blood cells of your immune system… High blood sugar can also trigger a protective immune response called inflammation, which can damage your internal organs over time.”

It is important to know the problems caused by prediabetes and insulin resistance start small and get worse over time. You need to be aware of what your blood sugar and insulin levels are, so you don’t cross over into a state of prediabetes or insulin resistance.

Oxidative Stress

Increased blood sugar or insulin cause free radicals which create oxidative stress. These free radicals damage your cells and lead to further body dysfunction and disease.

“A condition that may occur when there are too many unstable molecules called free radicals in the body and not enough antioxidants to get rid of them. This can lead to cell and tissue damage. Long-term oxidative stress may play a role in aging and the development of chronic inflammation, cancer, and other diseases.”

“Oxidative stress, which occurs as a result of an imbalance between free-radical production and antioxidant defense mechanisms, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune disorders, including thyroid diseases. Importantly, it has been correlated to thyroid dysfunction.”

Metabolism and Energy Production

Inside your cells there are small structures called mitochondria that make the energy your cells need to function properly. Your metabolism and energy are dependent on healthy mitochondria function.

High blood sugar levels overwhelm mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, causing them to produce excessive free radicals and reducing energy production.

As inflammation causes this mitochondrial dysfunction, the dysfunction leads to even more free radicals and increase oxidative stress.

“…dysfunctional mitochondria are frequently associated with enhanced oxidative stress. This oxidative stress is not only detrimental to the mitochondria themselves, but also initiates destructive (inflammatory) cascades…further exacerbating tissue damage…”

Thyroid Hormones

Your thyroid hormone needs to connect to what is called a receptor for it to do its job. The receptors for thyroid hormones are located inside your cells. Anything that decreases the function of these receptors will have a negative impact on how well your hormones will work. If the receptor doesn’t work, your hormone can’t work.

High blood sugar disrupts hormonal balance. This dysregulation increases stress on the body, amplifies inflammation, and reduces cell receptor efficiency.

Gut Microbiome Imbalance and Leaky Gut

Insulin resistance and high blood sugar promote dysbiosis (gut microbe imbalance) and increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”). This allows substances in your gut (like food and bacteria) to enter the bloodstream, triggering your immune system and causing systemic inflammation. This process also exacerbates autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease.

Lab Tests

The only way to know if you have a blood sugar or insulin problem is to test for it. A fasting glucose test by itself may not be enough to identify prediabetes or insulin resistance. Many people with a normal fasting glucose level have prediabetes and/or insulin resistance. A better test for prediabetes is called the HbA1c and insulin resistance can be calculated with a fasting glucose test + fasting insulin test.

There are a few tests for inflammation, but the hs-CRP (high sensitivity C-reactive protein) is the best one to do. Other tests that can detect inflammation are the ferritin test and the ESR test, but they are not as sensitive or specific at the hs-CRP test.
