Good and Bad Inflammation
There is good inflammation and bad inflammation. The good kind is short-lived and is part of the natural healing process. The bad kind lasts longer than it should and results in damage to the body. This bad kind is called chronic inflammation, and it plays a role in chronic health issues; especially those related to thyroid function.
How can inflammation cause thyroid problems?
Inflammation can affect the thyroid gland itself or the other parts of the thyroid gland regulatory system and the thyroid hormones themselves. If inflammation is part of your thyroid problem, you will never achieve optimal function until the inflammation is addressed. Chronic inflammation creates numerous obstacles to healthy thyroid function, and you may not even know it’s happening to you.
Inflammation is typically associated with heat, swelling and pain. This is true in the case of short-term inflammation. Examples of short-term inflammation would be the pain and congestion that happens when you have a cold or the pain and swelling that occurs if you sprain your ankle. This acute inflammation ends once the body has healed. Chronic inflammation is not so easy to identify. You can be chronically inflamed and not even know it.
How do you know?
So how do you know if have chronic inflammation? You would think that there would be all kinds of blood tests to evaluate inflammation, but we only have a few. The most common test is called a CRP or C-reactive protein test.
“C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein…the level of CRP increases when there’s inflammation in the body. A simple blood test can check your C-reactive protein level.
A high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test is more sensitive than a standard C-reactive protein test. That means the high-sensitivity test can find smaller increases in C-reactive protein than a standard test can.”
How Inflammation Affects Your Thyroid Gland
1. Disruption of Hypothalamic Function
Inflammation can impair your hypothalamus, a key thyroid regulator located in your brain, leading to reduced production of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH tells your pituitary gland to make TSH.
2. Pituitary Gland Dysregulation
Chronic inflammation affects your pituitary gland’s ability to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), disrupting communication with the thyroid gland. TSH is the hormone that tells your thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones.

3. Reduced Thyroid Hormone Production
Inflammation interferes with your thyroid gland’s ability to produce thyroid hormones (T4 and T3), leading to hormone imbalances.

4. Reduced Conversion of T4 to T3
Inflammation inhibits deiodinase enzymes responsible for converting T4 (inactive) to T3 (active), leading to lower levels of the active hormone and affecting metabolic processes.
“Systemic inflammation, (represented by higher inflammatory markers), which in turn is associated with systemic tissue injury, lead to reduced deiodinase activity. This results in decreased conversion of T4 to T3…”
5. Increased Reverse T3 (rT3)
Inflammatory conditions can favor the conversion of T4 into reverse T3 (rT3), an inactive form of the hormone, further reducing the availability of active T3.
“T3 is the more active hormone. T3 is 7-10 times more potent than T4. T4 can be thought of as a pro- or precursor hormone, and T3 the active hormone. However, a different process can, and does, occur… and the result is called reverse T3, or RT3. RT3 is interesting because it blocks T3 from its functioning. RT3 can be thought of as the thyroid system putting on its brakes.”
6. Thyroid Hormone Receptor Sensitivity
Inflammation can reduce the sensitivity of your thyroid hormone receptors, making it harder for cells to respond to thyroid hormones even when levels appear normal. When this happens, you can experience the signs and symptoms of poor thyroid function, even if your levels of hormone are in normal and healthy range.
7. Nutrient Deficiencies
Inflammation increases the demand for nutrients like selenium, zinc, and iodine, which are critical for thyroid hormone synthesis and conversion.
8. Increased Oxidative Stress
Inflammation generates oxidative stress, which damages thyroid tissue and enzymes involved in hormone production, reducing your gland’s efficiency over time.
